In our Practice Gratitude post last week, we talked about the positive effects of gratitude on both our mental and physical wellness. In that post, we also provided you with some suggestions for what your practice could look like.
We also know that a regular practice of gratitude at work, can provide many benefits for your team as well.
When you encourage your team
to be mindful of the good,
they’re less likely to get stuck in the challenges.
They’re more likely to feel supported
which can help them to stay
engaged and motivated
as they work through obstacles
to create success, together.
Today, we’re sharing some suggestions to support you in starting a gratitude practice at work:
- Start off 1:1s by asking your employee who or what they are grateful for.
- Create a gratitude board in a common work area where people can hang notes of appreciation.
- At team meetings, give everyone a few minutes to write down gratitudes about:
- a skill of theirs
- a process
- the culture
- a work colleague
- general (work or personal)
- Encourage people to add anonymous (or signed) notes about their gratitudes, and then read them aloud at company meetings. For example:
- people they appreciate in general
- people who have done something specific they appreciate (big or small!)
- a team success or even navigating a challenge together
NOTE: Be sure to ask how people how they like to receive feedback and appreciation in order to foster a positive work culture for everyone.
A regular practice of gratitude can help to decrease stress, unproductive conflict, and group silos. At the same time, it can increase motivation, engagement, and overall well-being for you and your teams.
Whether you’re a manager, leader, or team member, consider what a regular practice of gratitude for you and your team could look like at work.
