Today, we want to encourage you to rest up and take care of yourself—especially during this cold and flu season.
An article on the American Psychological Association website, reminds us that there are seven different types of rest; physical, mental, emotional, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual. They also suggest that it’s important to know what type of rest you need. We agree!
Getting a good night’s sleep is great, but sometimes you may still feel tired. The APA article notes, “while sleep is an important component of well-being, a multi-faceted approach to rest is key to restoring energy levels and improving your ability to function.”
As we’ve mentioned in many posts, it can be powerful to get into the habit of reflecting and checking in with yourself regularly.
So, we recommend reflecting and asking yourself something like,
“What type of rest do I need today,
to refuel myself?”
You could also get more specific and consider questions like this for the seven different types of rest:
- Physical: Am I getting enough sleep, relaxation, mobility, and/or restoration for my body?
- Mental: Am I taking enough breaks from decision-making and letting my mind wander?
- Emotional: Am I expressing myself in a way that shows compassion for myself and for the other person?
- Social: Am I surrounding myself with supportive and fulfilling relationships? Am I embracing alone time when needed?
- Sensory: Am I taking time away from electronics, loud places, and other types of stimulation?
- Creative: Am I finding ways to be inspired by things like nature, music, or hobbies?
- Spiritual: Am I seeking out ways to connect with my personal sense of meaning and purpose with things like meditation, spiritual groups, or prayer?
Learning how to take care of yourself is critical so you can live with energy, success, and satisfaction.
Consider creating a regular habit of self-reflection with one or more of the above questions.
