Last month, we talked about the importance of a growth mindset in your personal and professional lives.

growth mindset is the belief that challenges are opportunities to learn and improve. It’s about using setbacks as a way to grow and become more resilient, flexible, and adaptable to life.

Since those posts, some of you have written to us about the trouble you’re having making any progress on your personal or professional goals. You’ve asked something like,

“When does it makes sense
to change to my/our goals?”

Great question! Embracing a growth mindset doesn’t mean that you never change your mind about a goal. With new information and changing environments, you may, in fact revise and fine-tune your decisions.

So, what’s in between sticking it out even when it doesn’t serve you and quitting because it feels too hard?

We certainly can’t tell you what’s right for you, or tell you if the decision you’re making is right or wrong. But we can provide you with some prompts to support your decision-making.

  • If you’re struggling with whether or not to change one of your goals, ask yourself/your team one or more of these questions:
  • What was your “why” for the goal you want to change? Does this still hold true?
  • Has a recent change in a top priority shuffled your life or organizational focus?
  • Has there been no forward movement despite deliberate and consistent effort?
  • Are there new opportunities that have come to light that add more value or are more closely aligned with your/your company’s needs?
  • What would an adjustment to the existing goal look like, versus creating a completely new goal?
  • Try using our Benefits, Concerns, and Suggestions exercise that looks like this:
    • What would be the benefits of sticking with your current goal?
    • What concerns do you have about sticking with your current goal?
    • What suggestions do you have that could make your current goal better aligned with your/your company’s needs?
    • NOTE: You can also ask these same questions by replacing “current goal” with “new goal”, as the topic.

In a world that praises those who stick to their goals no matter the cost, we want to say…it’s okay to reassess and change your goals if they’re no longer serving you, the team, the organization.

If this post has helped you decide whether to move forward with an existing goal or new goal, that’s great!
