Over the past few weeks, we’ve been reviewing the steps in our Leader in You® framework. As a reminder, the framework has three key steps: Pause, Reflect, and Act.

First, we talked about the importance of PAUSING as a way to decrease your reactivity, so that you can respond as the leader you want to be.

Then we discussed Reflect on Self and Reflect on Others, as a way to understand what’s going on inside of you and what might be going on in the other person.

Today, we’re reviewing the third set, which is Act with POWER.

POWER is an acronym we use to help you remember the five core actions that powerful leaders take to move forward on important issues and initiatives.

  • What’s possible in this situation?
  • This shift away from reacting to the obstacles and challenges, to trusting that there are always possibilities, is a hallmark of great leaders and team members.
  • Having a possibility mindset can support you and your team in navigating challenges successfully, and in crafting new solutions together.
  • What can I do to create success?
  • Consider the difference between being told that you must do something, as opposed to being invited into a compelling understanding of why it’s important and how individuals and teams can help to create success.
  • Share with the team why the work matters and how you see it creating success and then encourage them to lean in with their thoughts.
  • What’s our shared vision or goals?
  • Look for places where you can create a sense of “we” by working together to craft an agreed upon plan together, that will move you forward toward success.
  • Think in terms of “our goal”, “how can we best move forward”, and “let’s lean in and come up with a solution, together.”
  • What action can we take to move forward?
  • Influence the team with your thoughts on who will do what by when, and then allow them to influence you on any criteria that may change the action plan.
  • As a leader, when you choose an action, it’s important to ensure that your team understands what success will look like as a result of that action.
  • What’s working and not working?
  • Successful leaders understand that plans are guidelines and that things don’t always go according to plan.
  • It’s important to schedule regular check-ins to allow yourself and the team to influence each other on successes, challenges, and ideas for moving forward.

When you work with any combination of the Leader in You framework, you’ll increase your success, engage others to support your efforts, and stay on track as you navigate the opportunities and challenges that each day brings.
